Core Site Celebration - Des Moines!
Congratulations to Be GLAD Core Site, River Woods Elementary School! We celebrate River Woods ES for their outstanding contributions to their students and dedication in implementing the Be GLAD Strategies.
A Cause for Celebration
The Des Moines Public School (DMPS) District has been hosting Be GLAD trainings since early 2017. The teachers at River Woods ES have done a wonderful job implementing the strategies so all of their students can be successful. Nearly all of the staff at River Woods ES have been through their Be GLAD training, and the site even has their own Certified Agency Trainer & GLADiator!
Be GLAD Implementation
DMPS also has 8 wonderful Be GLAD Certified Agency Trainers (CATs). What an amazing way to build lasting supports for teachers! The CATs and GLADiators have worked to conducted monthly follow-up sessions to highlight artifacts from the classroom. The team has also developed their own Process Grids, aligned with their standards and approved district curriculum. For on-going support to their teachers, the DMPS GLADiators send out “Strategy Spotlights” to share with teachers.
Teacher Spotlight
Special shout-out to Zipporah Smith, CAT from River Woods ES. Zipporah collaborated with the Be GLAD team over the summer to create a series of Social Justice resources for all teachers. She also hosted and taught many Be GLAD teacher webinars over the summer. Way to go Zipporah!

Celebrating Oakland USD!
Teachers and staff at Oakland Unified School District have succeeded in launching a pilot program for Newcomers and Emerging English Language Learners using Be GLAD strategies. The SAILL (Summer Academy for Integrated Language Learning) at Esperanza Elementary offered a summer program for 180 students from 23 Elementary Schools entering Kindergarten through 5th grade. Due to the phenomenal success, OUSD’s Summer Academy was featured on ABC7!
Build Oral Language & Writing Skills w/ the SPC!
The Sentence Patterning Chart has been called the “Blue Ribbon” strategy because of its power and potential. For teachers trained in Be GLAD, here are some fun and interactive activities that you can do with the SPC as a base.
Scaffolding Writing: Sketching
Humanity values creativity. We thrive upon both being creative and enjoying what others have created. That includes the arts, of course, but also the written word. We consume writing for many purposes, including learning new skills and topics, and for the pure pleasure of reading someone else’s thoughts or stories. Writing is all around us; on billboards and on social media, at the grocery store and in restaurants, and in the texts we utilize in schools. Writing, by definition, is a creative process. We are creating something when we write; a tool for communicating to others what we have learned, what our thoughts and feelings are, our stories, our experiences, and more.
